What is Patagonia, really?

Patagonia is not a country, and it is not a single, clearly defined region. It is a vast territory shared by Chile and Argentina, and its definition can vary depending on who you ask.

It is a land shaped by long distances, extreme weather, and a geography that does not adapt to people. It is people who must adapt to it.

Chile

In Chile, when we talk about Patagonia, we mainly refer to the country’s two southernmost regions: Aysén and Magallanes, and Chilean Antarctica.

When it comes to iconic highlights, on the Chilean side, you will find Torres del Paine National Park, considered one of the world’s great natural wonders. It is located near the small city of Puerto Natales, which you can reach with a direct flight from Santiago in about three hours.

Argentina

On the Argentine side, you will find the city of El Calafate, where the Perito Moreno Glacier steals the spotlight, and El Chaltén, a small town about three hours from El Calafate, known as the trekking capital of Argentina.

El Calafate is also about five hours by bus from Puerto Natales, which makes it possible to combine both countries in one trip.

These three destinations, Torres del Paine, El Calafate, and El Chaltén, are connected by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the third-largest continental freshwater reserve on the planet.

They share glacier tongues, gaucho culture, landscapes carved by ice, and a unique geological composition.

But Patagonia is not only these iconic places.

For those looking for a more authentic, wilder, and less-traveled Patagonia, there are many other possibilities.

On the Chilean side, for example, the Aysén region offers mountains, fjords, and less-explored national parks, with landscapes of untouched beauty.
